FRED FOREST
Fred Forest has always had a forefront position in contemporary art creation. After having been painter and drawer for print media as « Combat » and « Les Echos », he focuses his creativity on the artistial expression potential of the new media :technological communication devices and different interventions by means of mass media? Engaged in video art early as 1968, he is the first artist in France to create Environments. He keep innovating by conceiving different forms of press experiences of symbolial and critical importance, such as his white space in the newspaper « Le Monde » in 1972 an his mediatical operation of the artistical square meter. In 1973 he achieves different spectacular actions in the framework of the Biennal of Sao Paulo (Brasil) That earn him the award for Communication as well as his arrest by the military government. For his artistical creations Fred Forest uses the phone, video, radio, TV, telematic networks, computers, robotics, and cable. In 1974 he co-founded the group of sociological art for which he achieves a great number of dialogical characters. In 1984 he attends his Phd.of Estetics of Communication. Together with Mario Costa, head of Esthetics Department of the Universiy of Salerno and Derrick De Kerckhove, Director of the Marshall Mc Luhan Program at the University of Toronto, he creates a reserch group consisting of artists and theireticians. He represents France at the « Biennale » de Venice and at the « Documenta » of Kassel. He created several experimential TV programms, most important ones to remember the one on « Antenne 2 » and the one on R.T.B. In 1991 Bulgarian opposition forces support his candidacy as President of Bulgarian National TV, focusions on utopical and interactif projects...
The « Electronic Bible » and the « Miradors de la Paix », wich he installs near the borders of ex-yugoslavia form devices of symbolicy wich earn him a massive mediatial impact.
The work that this artist conducts is a work on communication itself. An approach wich is not only illustrated by the production of materially and physically tangible works, but in form of art. He considers that in the society of electronics and telecommunications, man is more and more heading towards a less concrete ans more mediatic relation with reality. A logical approach of dematerialisation wixh began with Marcel Duchamp's work and wich continued with Yves Klein and the conceptual movement. In a historical situation of rupture, never experienced before, Fred Forest points out that «  one has to invent today other forms of art, and not to try to adapt existing, anachronistic models of expression to the needs of toda's world ». He thinks that « artists of communication » try to express with their actions that we are situted in an order of reality connected to information and that the complex functioning of this order places the individual in a new position wich has to be expressed with new forms. The aim of artists who practice the esthetics of communication approach is not produce meanings in the first place, but to make us understand...how the general function of communications inrterreact with both our perception and representation systems.
